Barbara Shaw is a textile artist based in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.
I create art in textiles, hand-stitching many small scraps of fabric together in layers to create unique collage pictures. My subjects vary as I am constantly stretching the boundary of what can be depicted in material. My work has been likened to impressionist paintings-from a distance you can recognise the image and close up all the textures of the fabric and stitching can be seen.
I am a Member of Oxfordshire Craft Guild and a Licentiate Member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. For the past two years I have been Artist-in-Residence at National Trust properties, Claydon House in Buckinghamshire and Chastleton House in the Cotswolds; a picture from my experience at Chastleton House was purchased by Oxfordshire County Museum for their collections.
From June 27th-July 1st I will have a piece of work in ‘Tomorrow’s Child’ exhibition, which will take place in the Houses of Parliament. The exhibition ties in with a national campaign to raise awareness of mental health in young children and is open to the public for viewing. Bespoke Framing has superbly framed my entry for me.
Other venues where I am exhibiting in the next few months are Oxford Artweeks, Chipping Norton Town Hall, May 21st-30th, Oxford Town Hall 6th-28th May and Bucks Open Studios, Wendover, June 11th-26th. Later this year I will have some pictures on an Arctic theme in the Oxford Museum of Natural History. For further details of where you can see my art please visit my website www.artintextiles.co.uk/exhibitions .
My work is available as originals, cards and limited edition prints. I am very happy to discuss commissions and can include a client’s own fabric in a picture if they so wish.
To see work in progress I post details on facebook.com/artintextiles and twitter.com/art_in_textiles and you can see finished pieces on www.artinextiles.co.uk.
