Susan Gray trained in Fine Art at the Buckinghamshire Chiltern University College.
Susan Gray: My studio is situated behind the Sally Turner Antique’s in Wendover High Street where I regularly work and also open to the public. Much of my inspiration is from frequently painting the coastline of South Devon and West Cornwall, particularly West Penwith, where I paint in situ whenever possible on large boards or canvas on the beaches in all weathers. I look up the high tides and often borrow a fisherman’s hut to shelter from the constant changing weather conditions. It’s exciting!
If I can’t manage large boards in the fields or beach areas I do small studies or sketches which I then make into bigger paintings in the studio. My main medium is acrylic paint on board orcanvas but I also enjoy the qualities of oil paint. I work quickly and intuitively trying to get a feel of the place as well as some topographical information, using big brushes and painting knives.
I also run my own workshops once a month on a Saturday and once a month on Thursdays at my studio.
During the summer I am doing evening demonstrations at the studio and painting days at a local beauty spot (with use of a barn) – details on my website. I also run painting holidays – four days in May 2013 in South Devon, near Dartmouth, painting on the beaches.Exhibitions include
International Art Festival in Mainz, Germany
Childwickbury Art Fair, St Albans (annually)
Exhibits in Cornwall, Devon
Hawker Gallery, Buckinghamshire
Bucks Open Studios (annually)
